Save Tasmania’s ecosystems from industrial salmon farming

Labor and the Coalition have done a shocking last minute deal before the election to weaken our national environmental laws and protect the industrial salmon farming industry in Tasmania.

Mega salmon farms have had a devastating impact on Tasmania's shores – bringing pollution and disease, and pushing the Maugean skate's mature individuals below 150. The Maugean skate has swum Tasmania's waters since dinosaurs roamed the earth. Now it could be facing its final years.

We don't need any of this. Tasmania could lean into its green credentials and be a leader in sustainable foods for the future – like alternative proteins that taste as good as fish and meat but have a tiny environmental footprint. Food science is now so good that we can produce salmon without ever needing to kill another fish. Food innovation which boosts food security and protects our environment is where the government should be focusing its support, not cruel and destructive fish farms.

With the election right around the corner, and polls showing the result is on a knife's edge, we have a real chance to put pressure on our political leaders to commit to protecting Tasmania’s unique environments – Add your name to help save Tasmania’s precious ecosystems and biodiversity.

Adding your name to this petition will strengthen WePlanet Australia’s position when speaking with media and politicians about protecting Tasmania's precious ecosystems from salmon farming.
