It’s one of our biggest greenwash scandals yet: the UK government funnelling billions of pounds to the mega polluting, forest-destroying Drax biomass plant in the name of tackling climate change.
But a whistleblower just accused Drax of “misleading” the government and public over where it gets the wood it burns, and now there’s a chance to push for an end to this perverse policy.
Drax is the UK’s biggest single carbon polluter and has been caught sourcing wood from some of the world’s most precious forests. It should be getting fined, not feted. But because burning timber is classed as renewable energy, the government has made Drax a key part of its plan to meet net zero targets.
It’s a fudge, and Ed Miliband knows it – that’s why he’s already said he’ll halve the subsidy to Drax. Now let's ramp up the pressure to make sure he goes all the way and ditches biomass altogether. Add your name.
