Don’t Let Them Disappear: Keep Grizzlies Protected

Grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem are in grave danger. In 2024 alone, over 60 grizzlies died in Wyoming from vehicle strikes, conflict with humans, and agency-sanctioned killings. Yet some state officials are lobbying to strip these bears of their federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections.

This isn’t just a local wildlife issue, it’s a high-stakes national debate. If delisting goes forward, states like Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho would assume full control over grizzly bear management, potentially opening the door to trophy hunting and looser protections, without requiring comprehensive, science-based recovery plans.

The last time grizzlies were delisted, it triggered years of litigation, and for good reason. Without federal oversight, fragmented state policies and political pressure could unravel decades of conservation progress. Experts and tribal leaders warn that delisting grizzly bears now would be premature and deadly

We’re calling on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reject any proposal to delist grizzly bears until robust, enforceable, and science-based recovery plans are in place across all states in the bears’ range. Until then, grizzlies must remain federally protected under the ESA.
