The recently elected UK Labour government could be about to shut down its new nuclear power programme.
The UK's energy secretary Ed Miliband has called for a review into plans to build new nuclear power plants. This has raised serious concerns that the government may scrap ambitious plans to build 24 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity by 2050.
If the UK cancels its programme, it could signal a death knell for global efforts to generate near carbon free energy from new nuclear setting us back decades in the fight against climate change, lifting millions of out of poverty, and strengthening our energy independence.
So far this is only a ‘review’. That means we’ve got an opportunity to influence the Ed’s thinking and save new nuclear in the UK - but only if we mobilise quickly.
